Post Surgical Lymphatic Drainage

WHY MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE IS IMPORTANT AFTER SURGERY

Swelling and bruising are natural after an injury or surgery. During cosmetic surgery, pathways become temporarily congested causing excess cellular debris, metabolic waste dead cells, and fluid which accumulate in the tissue leading to swelling and discomfort.

This is why Postoperative Lymphatic Drainage is highly recommended and common in the plastic surgery field. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized manual technique that is recommended to accelerate the recuperation period. MLD treatment reduces swelling quicker, resulting in less pain, faster healing, and less scar tissue formation.

Fibrosis can develop in any area, with some common sites being the flanks, upper abdomen, and even in the legs. This happens when the liposuction is too aggressive in some areas and the fat is removed in an uneven fashion.

MLD- Vodder Technique for Pre and Post-Op Patients

Pre-Op

MLD treatments are recommended one to two MLD treatments prior to surgery; ideally the week before surgery. The increase in lymphatic flow facilitates reabsorbing of excess protein, cellular debris and waste that may have accumulated in the interstitial spaces of your skin.

Post-Op

Nowadays  as part of the Pot-Op recovery, surgeons are recommending their patients MLD- "Vodder Technique" to  promote wound healing.  The most significant achievement by Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) post-op treatments is the reduction of pain, bruising and edema.

Post-op treatments  can start as early as 36-72 hours after Plastic surgery.  Every case is different depending on the type and extent of the surgery. Having the MLD treatment for 2-3 weeks is ideal for cosmetic procedures, three to two times a week and can be reviewed after that.  Also, patients can ask their Surgeons for instructions on how many treatments he may suggests, then you can contact me, so I will follow all the instructions from your surgeon to take a great care of your post op recovery.

BENEFITS OF POST-SURGICAL MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE - VODDER TECHNIQUE

The benefits of starting early your MLD Post plastic surgery are many, not only reduce pain, swelling, and minimizes bruising, but decrease the risk of developing fibrosis considerably when you receive a Manual Lymphatic Drainage.

  • The inflammatory phase of recovery is sped up, therefore the patients heal substantially faster
  • Scar tissue is laid down evenly
  • Smooth, even results are achieved and attained more quickly
  • Patients can return to their daily lives much sooner
  • Therapists provide much needed psychological support through recovery phase. Many patients completely underestimate the impact of their surgeries or how they will be affected emotionally.

WHY DO I NEED A QUALIFIED THERAPIST FOR MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE (MLD)- VODDER TECHNIQUE?

Finding a properly trained MLD "Vodder Technique" therapist is important since this technique requires an extensive level of study beyond what is covered in traditional massage therapy programs. MLD therapists are trained through a rigorous, exclusive education in the lymphatic system. For post-surgical care, we recommend a licensed Massage professional who is specially trained and certified in Manual Lymph Drainage Vodder technique. Manual Lymphatic drainage post surgery is not painful, all the opposite it is a gentle soothing treatment.

POST LIPOSUCTION FIBROSIS/SCAR RELEASE TREATMENT

WHAT TO DO WITH SCARRING, FIBROSIS OR LUMPS THAT FORM AFTER LIPOSUCTION?

Fibrosis post liposuction is one of the more common complications of this procedure. Liposuction fibrosis post op is even more common due to the aggressive liposuction, and affects your end results. Fibrosis starts developing after the first month or two and has a distinct appearance.

After undergoing liposuction, there will be a layer of scar tissue between the underlying muscle and skin. This will lead to a feeling of tightness due to the tightening of scar tissue and fluid.

Excessive fibrosis may be felt by hand and be visually noticeable. The best recommendation is to prevent the formation of fibrosis as much as possible by getting manual lymphatic drainage soon after the surgery, and by wearing the compression garment and abdominal board.

If fibrosis has built up, it is recommended to receive Scar/ Fibrotic tissue release treatment.

Scar tissue release is different than MLD, because requires deeper pressure, and uses different techniques and should be received only when there is no more swelling or bruising in the area.

WHY I HAVE TO WEAR COMPRESSION GARMENTS OR "FAJA"?

Compression garments play an important role in proper healing after liposuction. After the procedure, a compression garment will most likely need to be worn immediately and for several weeks after as the initial recovery process takes place. Here some good reason why to wear a compression garment or faja:

  1. The compression garment controls postoperative swelling: Swelling, or tissue oedema, results from a complex balance of forces on the fluids in your body.
  2. It prevents collections of fluid: when fat is removed, space is left behind. The same forces that cause swelling will tend to cause fluid to collect in this space leading to pockets of clear fluid known as seromas.
  3. It helps to improve the contour and final appearance: The same space that allows fluid to collect allows the skin to slide back and forth over the underlying deep tissues and this can lead to a wrinkled skin appearance.
  4. Compression distributes scar tissue improves scarring, and it helps to organize the collagen fibers as these scars form causing it to be softer, earlier.
  5. Improves movement - Wearing a compression garment after surgery can make it easier to move around and maintain your posture.
