Manual Lymphatic Drainage - Vodder Technique

MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE (MLD) - VODDER TECHNIQUE

A different way to detox  from inside out!

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a unique, specialized gentle type of manual technique that moves fluid out of your tissues into lymph nodes where bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms are destroyed.

The gentle, 'light touch' is rhythmical, very precise hand movements technique called "Vodder technique" that has a powerful effect in the body and is the most well known manual technique to assist lymph flow and aid in drainage of tissues, and is performed by a specially trained lymphatic therapist to stimulate the circulation of lymph fluid around the body.

MLD is often associated with the treatment of edema through its drainage effect. It reduces swelling and pain and stimulates your immune system by increasing the circulation of white blood cells.

How does lymph fluid move in the body?

The primary way lymph moves in the body is through lymphangions. These are muscular units located inside larger lymph vessels also known as lymph capillaries. These units pump the lymph fluid from one segment of the vessel to the next segment, much like the peristaltic action found in the bowels.

Of course there are other ways lymph can be stimulated:

  • Deep abdominal/diaphragmatic breathing
  • Muscular contraction/exercise like swimming and rebounding
  • External compression, such as from compression garments
  • Manual Lymph Drainage therapy (MLD) given by a certified therapist

Sometimes the body has difficulty moving the lymph in an efficient manner. This happens when the lymphatic system may be overloaded with too much fluid in the tissues resulting in a condition called edema.

When a patient experiences edema or swelling in the tissues, Manual Lymph Drainage may be helpful.

Some General lymphatic drainage effects in the body:

  • The lymphatic system removes metabolic waste from the circulatory system
  • Increase reabsorption of nutrients and promotes drainage of fluids accumulated in the body.
  • Increases blood flow in deep and superficial veins
  • Immune system stimulation
  • It has a soothing relaxing  effect
  • It has an analgesic (pain relief) effect
  • Clears away infection and keeps your body fluids in balance
  • Relieves fluid congestion: swollen ankles, tired puffy eyes and swollen legs due to pregnancy
  • Is an effective component of the treatment and control of lymphoedema (which may occur after cancer treatment) and assists in conditions arising from venous insufficiency
  • Minimizes or reduces stretch marks
  • Can be used to speed healing after cosmetic surgery

MLD is good treating condition such as:

  • Cellulite
  • Edema
  • Postoperative edema or traumas
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Migraines
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sinus congestion
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Scleroderma
  • Chronic venous insufficiency
  • Insomnia
  • Stress
  • Digestive problems
  • Arthritis
  • Palliative care: Provision of comfort and pain relief when other therapies are no longer appropriate.

Absolute Contraindication:

There are some situations when you should not have MLD. Your lymphatic therapist will tell you whether you can or can’t. Always check with them if you aren’t sure.

  • Acute  deep vein thrombosis
  • Cardiac issues such as heart disease, acute angina pectoris or coronary thrombosis (heart attack), Cardiac edema, Chronic heart failure.  Using MLD increases the fluid load on the heart, and compromised cardiac systems.
  • Circulatory system problems, especially thrombosis, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). If there is any risk of embolism of phlebitis, do not get MLD.
  • Acute inflammation/infections caused by pathogenic germs (bacteria, fungi, viruses)
  • Acute renal failure
  • Fever caused by infections
  • Acute bronchitis
  • Cancer in the area. Active malignant cancers, undiagnosed lumps, or tumors whose origins have not been determined by your physician.
  • Active bleeding, internal or external.
  • High-risk pregnancy or late-term pregnancy with complications
  • Cirrhosis

The first visit will include a consultation during which the therapist will recommend the number and frequency of future sessions. Each session will last approximately 75 minutes. Where appropriate the therapist will work in conjunction with your medical practitioner.
